ANODISING AND CORROSION

Most people are aware that salt air is extremely corrosive to most metals, including aluminium. It can even increase the degradation of organic coatings such as powder coatings.

Salt air can corrode aluminium
windows up to 5km from the sea

But it's not just seaside or beachfront properties that are at risk. Studies show that salt air can significantly corrode metal on buildings up to 5 kilometres from the coast.

If you are building, extending or renovating in the coastal zone, you must take the effects of airborne salt into account when specifying the right aluminium finish to protect your property.

Coastal® is the new extra-tough finish for all specifiers, home builders and renovators working in the coastal corrosion zone.

Coastal® is an anodised finish to stand the test of time, and it comes with a 25 year Surface Integrity Guarantee from AAF (Australian Aluminium Finishing), the industry leader in Australia.

Specially developed with the harsh environment in mind, Coastal is the latest innovative addition to the AAF range of aluminium finishes, and achieves much higher performance levels than standard anodising.

When you choose Coastal, you get superior durability, excellent colour stability, and a finish that brings style and a fashionable new lustre to your aluminium products.

Developed with the harsh Australian environment in mind, especially the effects of corrosive salt air and humidity, EverShield Coastal® displays superior colour stability and resistance to chalking when exposed to ultra violet rays.

ANODISING BUILDS AND TOUGHENS

Unlike painted surfaces, where a layer of paint is applied to aluminium for decoration, Coastal is an anodised finish, and the anodising process builds up and toughens the aluminium's inherent resistance to corrosion.

The result is a super-hard finish, which increases the natural corrosion resistance of the aluminium by up to an incredible 30 times.

ANODISING – A UNIFORM FINISH ON ALL SURFACES

A PROCESS PROVEN IN OUTER SPACE

No environment is tougher than outer-space and that's why high-tech organisations like NASA use anodising to protect the aluminium components of their costly satellites. On a slightly more down-to-earth level, anodising is widely used as an exterior finish to protect aluminium windows and curtain walls in high-rise office blocks, where easy maintenance and longevity are essential.

In Australia, anodising has been used to protect aluminium for more than 40 years, on skyscrapers such as Sydney's Centrepoint and the Rialto Towers in Melbourne. In fact, during the recent major refurbishment of the famous Royal Exchange Building in Sydney, window glazing was replaced throughout, but the original anodised frames were retained - true testimony to their durability.

Anodising has also long been the preferred finish for aluminium boating applications.
